No money for the semester ticket? We can help!

Low-income students in UdK have the opportunity to receive a grant to cover the cost of the semester ticket.

Who can apply?

All students of the UdK can apply if they have been living in Germany at least a quarter of a year before applying.

How much is the financial help?

The amount of assistance depends on the number of applications and the degree of financial distress. In the last few semesters, however, the full ticket price was paid in each case. The assistance is paid retroactively. So unfortunately you have to pay for the ticket first.

What are the requirements for the application?

Those who have children or are pregnant, who come from non-EU countries who have special medical expenses (for example, glasses, food intolerance, disability), or simply very little money, have the greatest chance of receiving this assistance.

Other grounds for application are the writing of theses (also practical), compulsory internships, court costs or a reduction in earning capacity.

On the website of our joint semester ticket office with the TU Berlin you will find further application reasons and the application form with detailed explanations.

How to decide on the application?

The calculation of your application is similar to the housing benefit. It is based on a statutory statute. We compare all the money that you got in half a year, with your expenses for rent, electricity and health insurance. Income may be partially deducted from expenses such as rent deposit, loan repayment, Kindergarten fees, tuition and material costs (brushes, guitar strings, buttons but no books, hardware and software, instruments).

Without special compassionate grounds, a person without children may have 55% of the current ALG2 requirement. These are in 2018 228.8 euros. With special compassionate grounds, the limit is 100% of the ALG2 rule requirement, ie 416, - Euro.

For example:

You receive BAföG, work and your grandma lends you money. Total 700, - Euro.

You pay for rent, electricity and gas in total 300, - Euro and for health insurance 80, - Euro. Every month you buy for 50, - Euro colors and canvases.

700 € (income) -300 € (accommodation) -80 € (health insurance) -50 € (material costs) = 280 €.

Because 280, - Euro is more than 228,80 Euro, your proposal would be rejected without any compassionate ground, with compassionate ground it would be approved. For 280, - Euro are less than 416, - Euro.

If you have a child and you are a single parent, you could earn 1243, - Euro with the same expenses. Students with a child should therefore always receive a grant, with accordance to the decision made by the student parliament.

When can I apply?

The application deadline always ends on the last day of the re-registration period for the following semester. You have to hand in the application for the summer ticket in mid-February, the application for the winter semester in mid-July.

What is the base period?

We will calculate your application on the basis of the previous six months prior to the application. In the winter semester it will be between February to July and in the summer semester it will be between of August to January.

Where does the money for the subsidy come from?

Each semester, all students pay two percent of the ticket price to a fund to help classmates who do not have enough money to pay the semester ticket. This money is used exclusively for this help.
